About the Symposium

The Annual Symposium is the premier meeting for the research and practice of biomedical and health informatics. It convenes thousands of informaticians to share research and insights, offering opportunities to connect with industry leaders, find mentors, and learn from hundreds of sessions covering various aspects of health informatics.

Journal Eligible Initiative

Authors of accepted papers and student papers will have the opportunity to request consideration for publication in AMIA-owned and partner journals. Accepted papers referred to journals will have a 400-word abstract included in the AMIA Annual Symposium Proceedings.

Presentation Types

The AMIA 2025 Annual Symposium accepts the following submission types:

  • Paper: 5-10 pages. Must be original and not previously published or under consideration elsewhere. Includes author names, affiliations, and abstract (125-150 words). Accepted papers are presented in 15 minutes (incl. Q&A).
  • Student Paper: Follows paper format requirements. Primarily carried out by a student. Eligible for the Student Paper Competition. Requires advisor attestation. First author must be an eligible trainee.
  • Podium Abstract: Cutting-edge unpublished research or outstanding work previously published in a peer-reviewed journal (within the last year). Authors can reserve publication rights. Up to 18 minutes presentation. Abstracts NOT indexed in MEDLINE. 2-page document with a structured abstract and a brief abstract (50-75 words) for the submission website.
  • Poster: Preferred for preliminary research, small-scale studies, or innovative systems. Authors present during 90-minute poster sessions. Not indexed in MEDLINE. 1-page manuscript with a brief abstract (50-75 words) for the submission website.
  • Panel: Max 4 participants + moderator. 90-minute sessions focusing on clinical research informatics. Max 3 pages. Includes abstract (125-150 words), panel description, relevance, audience, and discussion questions.
  • Informatics Debate: Max 4 participants + moderator. 90-minute sessions debating biomedical informatics issues. Max 3 pages. Includes abstract (150 words), debate description, positions, and audience engagement plan.
  • System Demonstration: Illustrates leading-edge systems (in use, development, or prototype stage). 30 minutes per demonstration. 1-page manuscript with abstract (50-75 words).
  • Tutorials: Max 5 presenters. 3 hours max. Combines didactic and interactive content. Max 4 pages. Requires detailed information on content, objectives, faculty, and prior presentations.
  • Collaborative Workshops: Max 7 presenters. 3 hours max. Encourages participation and collaboration (forums, research forums, challenges). Max 4 pages. Similar proposal requirements to tutorials.

Submission Guidelines

  • Inclusive Language: All submissions must adhere to the AMIA Inclusive Language and Context Style Guidelines.
  • Use of Generative AI: Authors must disclose the use of generative AI techniques in their research. Failure to comply may result in rejection.
  • Format: Submissions must be in PDF format, single-column, U.S. Letter size (8.5 x 11 inch) with one-inch margins. Specific formatting requirements apply to titles, author information, and main text.
  • Page Limits: Strict page limits apply to each submission type, including all tables, figures, references, and acknowledgements.
  • Reference Format: Vancouver Style must be used for all references.
  • Templates: Submission templates are available for download.

Programmatic Themes

Submissions will be organized around six thematic areas:

  1. Academic Informatics / LIEAF
  2. Clinical Informatics
  3. Clinical Research Informatics
  4. Consumer Health Informatics
  5. Public Health Informatics
  6. Translational Bioinformatics

Tracks

Submissions will be categorized into one or more of the following tracks:

  1. Foundations: Conceptual and methodological advances.
  2. Applications: Innovations in design, technology, implementation, and evaluation of health information systems.
  3. Policy: Informatics-relevant policies, recommendations, and evaluations.

Learning Objectives

Each submission requires at least one learning objective, defined using the format: "After participating in my session the learner will be able to…"

Target Audience

Trainees and professionals in biomedical informatics and related disciplines, including clinicians, health IT professionals, computer scientists, researchers, policy makers, and vendor representatives.
