ESEM 2025: Call for Papers (Technical Track)

The Technical Papers track of the International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) 2025 features submissions that describe original, unpublished work in software engineering and software measurement, with a strong empirical foundation. Papers in this track should communicate fully developed research and related results, with a strong emphasis on the methodological aspects of the research and the assessment of the validity of the contributions.

Key Guidelines:

General Scope of Submissions

Submissions should not be under consideration for publication or presentation elsewhere. Papers may address any aspect of software engineering but must tackle the problem from an empirical perspective using a rigorous empirical method. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.
  • Cross- and multi-disciplinary methods and studies.
  • Formal experiments and quasi-experiments.
  • Case studies, action research, ethnography, and field studies.
  • Survey research.
  • Simulation studies.
  • Artifact studies.
  • Data mining using statistical and machine learning approaches.
  • Secondary and tertiary studies, including systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses, and replication of empirical studies.
  • Position papers relating methodology and contributions to established frameworks.

Topics of Interest

Topics commonly addressed using an empirical approach include:

  • Evaluation and comparison of software models, tools, techniques, and practices.
  • Modeling, measuring, and assessing product or process quality and productivity.
  • Continuous software engineering.
  • Software verification and validation, including analysis and testing.
  • Engineering of software systems with machine learning components and data dependencies.
  • Applications of software engineering to different system types and domains (e.g., IoT, Industry 4.0, Context-awareness systems, Cyber-physical systems).
  • Human factors, teamwork, and behavioral aspects of software engineering.

We also welcome submissions on:

  • Development, evaluation, and comparison of empirical approaches and methods.
  • Infrastructure for conducting empirical studies.
  • Techniques and tools for supporting empirical studies.
  • Empirically-based decision making.
  • Multi-disciplinary work.
  • Transfer and application of empirical methods from other disciplines.
  • Replication studies.
  • Studies with negative findings.

Important Dates (AoE - UTC-12h)

  • Abstract (mandatory): April 18th, 2025
  • Submission: April 25th, 2025
  • Notification: June 16th, 2025
  • Camera-ready: June 27th, 2025

How to Submit

  • Page Limit: 10 pages (excluding references) or 12 pages (including references).
  • Submission Platform: EasyChair. Select the track “Technical Papers”.
  • Format: PDF, formatted according to the standard IEEE template.
  • Abstract: A structured abstract is required with the headings: Background, Aims, Method, Results, and Conclusions.
  • Empirical Strategy: Papers must contain an explicit description of the empirical strategy used or investigated.
  • Ethics: Comply with IEEE ethics guidelines. Submissions must not have been published elsewhere or be under review elsewhere simultaneously.
  • Double-Blind Review: Authors must omit identities from the submission and use third-person references to their prior work.
  • Review Process: Peer-reviewed by at least three experts, with a meta-review. Papers outside scope, exceeding page limits, or not following formatting guidelines will be desk-rejected.
  • Registration Requirement: At least one author must register as a full (non-student) participant by the camera-ready submission deadline. Each accepted paper requires a separate full registration.

Open Science Policy

Authors are expected to include a data availability statement in their submissions, providing links to open data/replication packages or explaining why data cannot be disclosed.

  • Recommendations: Share pre-prints on arXiv and replication packages in an archival repository (e.g., Zenodo).
  • For qualitative studies, provide explanations of the study protocol, coding, and transcription schemas.
  • For quantitative studies, include information on source code, dependencies, and data cleaning/training/evaluation steps.
